Phases of the Moon Flip-Flap Books - Simply Skilled in Second

Phases of the Moon

IMG_0380

I was like a kid today!  I had so much fun teaching…which I have been feeling a lot lately!  I have been inspired and my teaching rejuvenated and I’m excited about it 🙂  What a great feeling…
We have been learning about the Phases of the Moon over the last week.  The other day we made the phases of the moon with oreos…ummmm….YUMMY!  I’m addicted..I digress 🙂
We were scientists, so we used our goggles, made the phases and then ate them up….I wish I could show you some pictures of my cute little kiddos in their goggles but I can’t so you are stuck with me!

This Oreo Phases of the Moon Sheet was made by the very talented Hilary Lewis!  You can check out her TPT Shop Here!

Then today we made these… Moon Flip-Flap Books!!!!
L-O-V-E them 🙂
We started with a Partner Reading of The Moon.  After they finished reading the text to each other, they told their partner their two favorite facts about the moon.  Then they began to create their flip-flap books.   Here are a few photos of our Work in Progress..

This is our new Moon bulletin board display…The best part of this whole day is my Assistant Principal walked in when we were doing this activity…BAM!  Unannounced Observation and ALL HIGHLY EFFECTIVE MARKS…Can I get a WOOOOHOOOO!!

This is a close-up of the bulletin board…

Here is one of my student’s Moon Flip-Flap Books completely done!  What a great job they did!

Then they saw my Space Flip-Flap Book on my desk and begged me to let them make it!  We are only really focused on the Moon…but how do you say no when they want to learn 🙂

Thanks again for stopping by :)Hugs,

  1. What an AWESOME lesson!!! Doesn't it make you feel great when you are observed during a great lesson? I had one of my best walk throughs today and it was a great feeling!

  2. We did the same phases of the moon oreo activity a few weeks ago! Its always a kid favorite! Your flip books look GREAT! You're so talented! Space and Plants are my two favorite science subjects to teach!

  3. I love the flip flap book idea. The other fourth grade teachers and I like to do the Oreo cookie moon phases activity, too. I would love to do the booklet withem. The kids would just "eat it up". Sorry. I couldn't help myself. Lol!

You have great ideas. Please keep them coming.

    Sincerely,

    Sherry

  4. Well done you. Am loving your little flippy flappy booklet thingies. Very cool. My 8 yr old homeschooled daughter loves doing "food colouring lotions and potions" with me – translates as creating chemical reactions in the kitchen: food colouring and detergent in milk, etc. Thanks for this opportunity – we are yet to do space. thursdaytook@hotmail.com

  5. I didn't read the rafflecopter blog comment question before I commented…here I go again…

Congrats on being observed so successfully!

I love your flipbooks! We do the phases of the moon with oreos, and the kids love them! I'd love to win and be able to use your flipbooks, too! It would make this science unit so much more fun. I love teaching science to my kiddos because they get so excited about investigating and discovering "new" things.

  6. Wow, these flip-flop books are FANTASTIC! The Moon by Seymour Simon is included in our core reading series. These books would be a great way to extend that story into our science instruction!

My favorite science topic is animal habitats! 🙂
