Difference Between Guided Reading and Close Reading

Differences Guided Reading and Close Reading Video

Do you know what the difference is between Guided Reading and Close Reading?

I sure didn’t in the beginning. It wasn’t until I was in a situation 8 or 9 years ago where I was talking with my colleagues and the discussion turned to Close Reading. I am going to be real, I had no idea what they were talking about. And I felt a little intimidated as to why I didn’t know about it.

So I dug in,

and did some major research to find out exactly what Close Reading was and how I could include this in my own classroom.

And I am so glad that I did. Close Reading is a critical skill for students to develop and once I became confident to incorporate Close Reading, it became an important part of my own Guided Reading small groups.

In my own classroom, I loved doing BOTH Close Reading AND Guided Reading. It kept my students on their toes and was really good for breaking up the monotony in my small groups that could happen throughout the year.

There are differences with Guided Reading and Close Reading, and in my latest Youtube video I walk you through the differences and what the focuses are of Guided Reading and Close Reading.
